Default 951 Gets Some Love - Wins Class in Show Today

From time to time we sometimes grouse about our Porsche cars not getting the love and attention we think they deserve.

A few weeks ago a couple of my buddies wanted to put their cars in the Space City Cruisers Car Show down here south of Houston today. So they wanted me to get in with them and enter the Porsche. After a couple of hectic weeks getting some things done that needed to be done on my 1986 951, I said I would get in the show with them.

I spend a week of nights detailing on the car. Then we text around last night and I get loaded and ready and go over this morning. Pass through the Tech 1, Tech 2, and 3, finish the registration and I am in.

I get parked between a Chevy SS 396 and a big Chysler Imperial. Well at least I have space in my space . And then a 1967 912 gets parked on the other side of the Chrysler. More P cars, yeah . Of course the show was dominated by Corvettes, Mustangs, and Chevys and Fords of all descriptions from 1929 to 2012, customs, a few Dodges, and some others as you would expect.

There were some great cars there too. My favorite was an absolute dream 1967 Jaguar XKE. Wow is all I can say. I have never seen one that good anywhere. My 951 was looking good, but nowhere even close to the same league as this Jag ever. For that matter, few other cars are, in my opinion. A great 1969 racing Corvette was also on my list. Shows you where I am in the car world.

Anyway I won in Class 32. Furrin ! (Just kidding) The class was Import Sportscar. The Jag was in another class - it should be in a class by itself . But it was nice and I am a rookie in shows having only done one with a Vette way back 20 years ago or so. We did get second overall in a big show then, but this was nice for my 951.

And while we did get some pictures on Stephens camera, he had to go and I dont have the pics. I will post a few when I get them.

On my club affiliations I listed Rennlist . And on my handouts promoting the P cars to those that were interested in this type of car.

So thanks to all the guys on this Forum who help keep these cars up and going . And thanks to Space City Cruisers too for putting on a nice show today too.

One thing I did learn, and will share with you guys who are not "showers" like I am not either, is to dont let detailers or mechanics work on your car in the show . Several mechanics were by, some I knew, some I didn't. Some I would never ever let work on even my lawnmower after their ideas LOL !

Do not let any detail product salesman, or the T&A babes selling for them, near your car once you have it completed. They are all well meaning and do believe that after one shot of their super sprays and polishes, and a few hundred dollars of course, you will be on your way to collect a win.

But what they dont understand is that it might not be compatable with what you used. And that our paint on the earlier Porsches is not the same as the clear coat paints used today . They are magnetically drawn to the nose cone, hood, and the Porsche emblem shield, and have to spray or apply their super product there. Even if you have politely asked them not to . They have to "show" you how good it works. Every one of them left a greasy smear on my car, which in spite of my efforts there I could not get off completely . I was out having to work those back out today.

So if they have a bottle or can in their hand, get out front of of the car and growl is my new mode if I am in any more shows.

I know you old hands all know this already.

Congrats on the win. I have only entered my car in contests with the PCA so Porsche only competitors so far. They seperate the air cooled and the water cooled classes. I was just saying the other day I should try a generic car show and see how it does.

As far as having people walk up and spray your car with something. I was at the gas station Friday and two people were walking up & spraying something on the cars and I got sprayed but I had the truck so wasn't as upset as I would have been if it was one of the Porsches. You are correct the next morning when the sun hit the truck there was a smear were they sprayed this crap. They also wanted $25 a can for it.

Congrats on your win and yes car show can sometime be a PITA .Worst is trying to keep peoples from touching or leaning against the car, grown up I found has less respect for your machine than kids.Funny to say but most kids will know it's a Porsche & be very careful around it.Lol things to look for, guys with big Harley belt buckles & chain wallet & women with huge studded purses swinging their camera around. This is what I do to keep damage to minimum plus staying or have someone with the car at all time.

I added a few pics of the 1967 Jaguar off of my camera and I had one engine pic of my car on my IPhone.

And my only clear picture of my car in the garage after I finished detailing up on the engine. I will get a few more outside shots here when I can get them from Stephen.

I really prefer a real camera when I need to take a picture. But someone will always ask me why I dont have one on the phone. One reason is I dont take good phone pics LOL!

nice job and nice '51!!

On a similar not the PCA up here in New England held their annual Porchefest car show back in Sept. These shows are dominated by 356's, 911's, 996's etc. The last few years the 928's have been coming out of the woodwork and I'm glad to see that but these '44's are few and far between. There was a total of about 6 944's there.

And guess what won BEST IN SHOW? A 1988 Celebration edition 944 N/A (charcoal black with the plaid seats). When I read that I nearly fell off my chair. He beat out the entire field with this car and his class including a 914/6 and a 904. His class had a S2 for second and a nice 928 for 3rd.

I think we are finally being validated here!!!
