help, removing a cam timing gear
i need to know how to remove a cam timing gear off a 944 turbo cam tower with the tower removed from the car, i have heard people say use penetrating oil and wiggling it off but i dont know if that is while it is still on the car. i have removed the little 9mm bolt on the larger bolt that looks connected to the timing gear but then what?

After you pull the 7mm bolt, pull the rotor mount cylinder out. Behind it you'll find the infamous cheesehead bolt. You can try to remove it, but I would just go ahead and order a new one and drill out the old one, because chances are that's what you'll end up having to do. So you might as well just save yourself some time and drill in the first place. After that, the gear should pop right off, revealing the woodruff key. My key came out easily but I've heard of some people having problems with it.
That should sum it up.
Oh, that "Large bolt" isn't a bolt, I'll call it the "nut-thing".(sorry for my lack of a more technical term) The 10mm cheese head bolt (also called a triple square) inside the nut-thing presses the nut-thing against the cam gear. The nut-thing is there so you can provide counter torque while removing or installing the cheese head bolt. The 10mm cheese head bolt screws into the camshaft btw.
Does that help, or is it too confusing?

sorry st3mpy but still confusing but just cause i have no clue what each parts actual name is and what it looks like. i have gotten a timing gear puler but it has failed multiple times so i know there is something i am missing somewhere. so the 10mm bolt is in side the part sticking out of the center of the nut thing, am i correct. also got any pictures?

This should clairify things. Remove the round plug for the rotor if you havent already and then you will see the triple square under it, as long as you use a quality bit, and keep it square it will come out just fine.

The "nose" plug comes out!
Spray/soak with penetrating oil
Wiggle it out ----carefully.

If you have a lot of old drill bits, you may have one that will fit snuggly in the hole in the nose with a gentle tap of a hammer on the drill bit--it worked for me.
It helps in "wiggling" the nose out

A punch would work better in the hole. Easier to hang onto to "wiggle" and it won't break if you hit it with a hammer. You could try vise grips too...

If it really is stuck and not wanting to come off, run a tap down the hole on the inside, and thread a long bolt in to force it off!
Any damage to the outside of the plug needs to be cleaned up with emmery cloth (sand paper) to remove any high spots, or it will cause the rotor to bind up when re-installed!
I have also found a swift tap with a hammer to help unseat the plug..
Good luck!
