handling problems on 17s?

I don't have a dawg in the Hankook camp but... That review sounds like a setup problem to me? I had a bad alignment on my 951 once, it was doing that following grooves thing and in addition, it felt like the car went up on tippy toes (technical term) at 120mph.

Took it to another shop for an alignment and all that crap went away!

Setup I think is more important than the tires (keeping the base speed rating in mind) on my little 92 Tercel I run Nexgen H rated, all seasons. It went from a 13 by 4.5 to a 17 by 7. Absolutely no problems, no darting, no groove following. I slide it (Scandinavian flick on dry asphalt) the rears show no ware and the fronts ware evenly! It changes lane as fast as you can move the steering wheel!

My point being, setup is more important than the tires.

PS the Hankook's might be noisy but that's subjective. PPS Unless everyone comments on a tire being noisy!

most of the reviews of the tire I have read were very positive but complementing the smooth ride, good wet dry traction etc. However I dont think the average joe attacks the road the same way we do either. I put some 16" fuchs on the rear of the car from another 951 wearing some cheapo H rated mastercraft tires and felt no rear end wag. Pushing on the car from the side I can actually observe more movement on the end with the hankooks. I dunno, im no scientist but these v4s are not winning me yet.

well the vote is in, I put some 285 30 18s on the back and the rear end is again controllable and tight. The tires are hankook ventus y-rated this time. Sweet

Porsche recomend to change the rear wishbone support. The stock one wont hold for long, it has too much rubber.

This is Porsche Technical data on changing to 17" on 944 chasis.

I changed from the OEM 16" phone dials with the stock tires because I simply couldn't stand the look of those wheels. I found a set of 17" Cayman wheels on Ebay for $375 and after trying them with the stock tires from the Cayman I noticed that the rear left tire rubbed the outer fender lip when aggressively accelerating in a right turn. I referenced the Tire Rack research tool and reviews for tire brand/models and bought some Bridgestone G-Force Sport tires that were the "proper" diameter for the '87 944 NA and 1/8" narrower rear tread. They were shipped to a recommended local tire shop and after the changeover I couldn't be more pleased. Here in Florida, standing water performance is important. They're quiet, responsive and solved the rubbing problem. I had to use a 1/4 in spacer in the fronts to properly shoulder the spindle, nothing in the back.

Very interesting info coilbox. I am running 18 inch 993 rims and have 22 inches of rubber on the ground in the back... and the ride is great! Quiet, smooth, corners good, my only complaint is slight tramlining on some of the saggy contry roads. I am thinking of widening my front tires from 225 to 235 or 245 to fight this.

I did something similar, I went with 17" Boxster S wheels in 7 & 8.5 with 48mm offset front and 50mm offset rear. The rears work like a charm, and the fronts worked, but only of I removed the bearing dust caps. I've since added 7mm spacers (4-5mm would probably work too), and the dust caps are back on the car now.
