so when removing the cam-cover from a 944t 1986 do you need to drain the oil first, also doest having the car run up to temperature prior to removing the cam cover help in the removal?

u don't need to drain the oil. but there's going to be an oily mess anyway. there's just that much residual up top.

do NOT have the car at temperature. engine should be dead cold when u remove and install bolts.

why are u pulling the cam tower?

Yes do it cold. BTW... there is no cam cover. The cam shaft is in an aluminum housing (a box) that hold the cam and lifters.

No need to drain the oil;

But you might consider putting a piece of Cardboard above the exhaust manifold, to catch residual oil, and any lifters that might jump out!*

(*The lifters work really hard and so They will try to escape their house once it's unbolted! Listen close and you might hear them yell "Freedom")

make sure u clean up the old gasket material on both sides and put a new gasket on. otherwise it'll leak like no tomorrow. and while yer in there, rear cam tower gasket gasket if u haven't done it recently

and remember to set engine to TDC.

5 have heard of people wrapping the headers in plastic wrap. I would advise doing this or be in for lots of smoke when you start it up(oil will cover the headers and burn off)

That is alot of work for a little cleaning. If you must, why not do it on the engine.

I have to agree.....if it's for cleaning up etc, I'd leave it in place.

I was thinking of removing mine to clean, but decided to leave it in place and work around it.

Cheers,

Geoff.

ps Ernie......nice engine bay.......
