Default Squeaky water pump?

After replacing the water pump on my turbo, I started it up and to my delight there is a new squeak coming from inside the belt cover. I shut it off as soon as I had visions of belts smoking and snapping.

Here's the mystery, the water pump right out of the box(brand new bosch) seemed a little too hard to turn. If I tried to spin it with my fingers it would stop as soon as I let go.This is the second pump I've bought from the same supplier within the past two months, but I might be imagining the change in resistance.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience? I'm going to run it again with the front belt cover off before I make any false accusations.

Make sure belts are tensioned properly. Every water pump I have installed has never spun freely. You don't want them to. If belts are too tight, they can make all sorts of noise.

If it is not turning smoothly and freely before you install it, there's something wrong with it. Those things should be free and smoothe.

I don't know what to think. I did the belt tension and everything else as I normally do. I turned the motor at least 10 revolutions during the whole process and everything seemed fine

Whats a guild?

Smooth? Yes, free? no. If it's free, that means that it's worn out. Same thing as rollers. You want smooth, but not free. Resistance is good, as it means the bearings are not loose and worn.

I think he is referencing the guide bar for the updated waterpumps.

I don't have any other way to say this so WHAT THE ****KK

I started the car with the front belt cover off and the waterpump pully isn't moving. The belt is just dragging on it as the car is running perfectly. After about 5 seconds it starts squeaking(obviously)

I'm usually a very tolerant person, but somebody is going to pay for this

Make sure that your pump is correct for a 2.5. If you have a 2.7/3L pump, the impellar is bigger and could be the cause of your binding. If it was spinning freely, I would make this my first guess to your problem.

I wouldn't say it was spinning "freely." And now I can hardly move it with a pair of vice-grips. Plus I bought the same pump for my n/a and it worked fine. Thanks for the help though

Won't know until you pull it. Crazier things have happened. Don't rule it out. Unless the bearings just immediately seized, there really couldn't be any other reason for a complete seizure of the water pump so quickly.

You were right Moddederrthang, I obviously bought the wrong pump. I just ruled it out because I bought the exact same one for my n/a and it works fine.

The original one says 2.5L and the wrong one doesn't, I wonder if I've got the wrong one on the n/a too...so confused. I'm just happy it didn't snap my belt, and since I bought it from amazon they'll take it back no questions asked

EDIT: It won't let me upload a picture because it's too big, but it's pretty obvious once you look at the impeller

Glad you figured it out, and glad that you can return it without issue. The other W/Ps usually have 2,7 on the casting somewhere. I would also get a new belt, since it was run against the siezed pulley.
