Question What's the right thermostat?

I notice several options for thermostats based on temperature. I have an 87 944 NA. My temp guage sits around 180 degrees normal operating temp. Is there a proper part number for this car? It's a manual trans and with a/c installed.

If you car runs at normal temperature fit the same as you remove, it's stamped on the thermostat. If it's runs hot/cold you have a miss-matched thermo/switch combo. The fan switch is on the radiator and it is also stamped with a temp. An 80 thermo needs an 85 switch and a 71 thermo needs a 75 switch.

That's understood. I just wondered if anyone knew before I start disassembling the front end so I could order the proper part. The car runs in the normal range with no issues. I have a new water pump and am planning to replace the belts and all and would like to place the parts order once and have them on hand when I do.

Thing is everyone will run different, I run 71 in Florida but that might not work in Ohio.

If you must get one before you take the old one out, check the temp stamped on your fan switch. Its on the lh radiator channel, pull the electrical plug off and use a flashlight to see the temp stamped on the metal portion. If it says 85 get an 80 thermostat, if it says 75 get a 71 thermostat.

I looked in that area and I can't see anything except the boot on the switch without pulling off the upper radiator hose. They really buried the switch. I had to replace one once and it was not as easy as it looked. I guess since it isn't really a time critical issue (and I have another DD) I'll just wait until it's out and then order one from vertex. They always get things to me within 2 days. When I look in the cataloges they just show one for 83 to 88. It's probably the same one that came with the car, although I will make sure the numbers are correct since it'll be easier to do when the front is in pieces.

Or order both and return the one you don't use. I'm sure Vertex or 944online will both let you do that.
