How much play is in your shifter side-to-side? I have some kind of short-shift kit in my car (installed by PO) and the spherical bearing in it is a bit loose. Moving the shifter side-to side in neutral, just until it hits the detents the **** is moving almost an inch. I know some of this is coming from the rounding out of the shift lever and the shift rod, but I think some is coming from the linkage at the transaxle. How much play is in a healthy stock 944 shift lever?
I just took the shortshifter out of the car to get a better look at it. I would take pics but I can't find the charger for my phone right now. Anyway it consists of an aluminum block with a hole for the shaft on the transmission, and another hole above it which accepts a cut-down female-threaded rod end. Anyone know who might have made this thing? It honestly looks like a bit of a bodge job. . .
The spherical bearing itself has about 3mm of axial play and maybe 1mm of radial play.

I posted a link to a DIY years ago, to eliminate that. It involves over drilling, and installing a brass sleeve. Very simple fix. I'll look for it.
I was just in RDU yesterday working on a broken jet.... It was HOT!!!

I looked at some pictures of the various kits out there and it looks like I have the Schnell kit or something very similar. It's still functional, so I think I'm going to put it back in the car and order some stuff to make a custom one. I like the design of the one from Mantis Sport, it addresses the play in the lateral strut that seems to be ignored in other designs:

I replied to your post because I bought the ebay shifter and it is crap (sloppy steel-on-steel spherical) so I designed my own with a Teflon heim and 4140 steel construction....zero slop

The problem is even more compounded by a worn/ barreled shift ****/lever pin. If the shift rod interface is worn out over 10.5 mm, then even a new pin (10mm) will be sloppy when reinstalled. I posted a digram how to lathe one out for your exact rod interface after you straight-bore it again.
