Stiff shifter side to side motion
Hello all,
I have been having trouble with the side to side motion on the shifter on my 86 951. I had it stored for a while so I figured something got rusty and just needed some lube and action. The car has no trouble going forward/back in the gears just side to side. I took apart and lubed the shifter, but that looked fine and learned that the bearings there are mostly responsible for forward/back. I have also been spraying wd-40, pb blaster, and lithium grease on top of the transmission where the shifter goes into the trans. However, it is still very stiff-I need two hands to move side to side. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should try next?
I thought since the linkage on top of the trans is responsible for the side to side action I could try to replace that but I havent been able to find the part online yet. Someone also said it could be internal to the trans. I did just top up the trans oil with Swepco 201.

Thanks for the tips guys. Removing/cleaning the trans linkage makes a lot of sense.
Im not sure why but I feel a little timid to remove the linkage. It is just hard for me to see what is going on up there. The ebay pics help a lot though. Just looks like 3 bolts to remove?
