Default S2 Check Engine Light Help

So my Check engine light pops on and off at different times and I cant figure it out. And no I don't mean the ! light.

The symptoms.
maybe a bit of rpm bounce - 900-950 at stop lights. I did have the car stall on start up one day but it started right back up with out any hesitation. other than that the car runs the same whether the light is on or off.

Things Ive checked.
I replaced the DME relay with the one from my 88, no change.
I checked the fuel pressure, everything was within Clarks Garage specs.
I have checked all connections I can find for proper fitment, and I have checked vac lines for cracks.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, but not your random thoughts

I realize were not talking OBDII here, but Is there any reasonable way to pull the code(s)?

I have read that they can be flashed with a gas pedal, ignition tap dance. but no one knows what it is. I do know it is not the same dance for the 968. Ive tried it a dozen times now.
I believe they can be pulled with a Porsche PIWIS,or a System Tester 9288, but I obviously dont have one of those.

I was looking at http://www.9ss1.dk/porsche944/garage/vol1a/vol1a.html and scrolled down to the bottom to see how long it was to print, and found the flash dance. I went out to the car started it up and wouldn't you know it. Check engine light is off. this should be a good thing unless you trying to get codes. I believe I read that the codes disappear once the car is shut off.

I have tried it before because it appears to be the same for the 968, but have never gotten the light to flash.
