Default 944 turbo timing

hi guys
i just recently purchased a 87 porsche 944 turbo. the car seemed to run fine but when i took it in to get smogged everything except the air was high. i took off the timing cover and the timing marks was were they suppose to be except the cam mark was around the 3-4 o'clock position. if i turn the cam to the correct position will i break something. what is the correct way to adjust the cam timing
thx

What kind of timing cover did you remove? Was it chrome?

Start with Clark's Garage:

There's also the Haynes manual, the factory workshop manuals, and plenty of threads here on the topic if you do a search.

If your car runs at all, then it's within a tooth or two of being correct. Do a little research and find the correct marks and check again.
