Default Exhaust question

I'll apologize in advance if this is a stupid question, but here goes...

I have a full Lindsey Racing exhaust setup on my car (MSDS headers, 3" mandrel bent exhaust from headers back with a hi-flow cat and Magnaflow muffler). I'm generally pretty happy with the exhaust, but it can be a bit loud and buzzy at times. Not a problem on the track, but it's not ideal for the street, so I was wondering if anyone had advice for the best way to quiet it down a bit?

I've seen on Lindsey's site that they also sell "pre-mufflers" to install in place of the cat - could I perhaps install one of those in addition to the cat (need to pass emissions tests)? Or would I see a dramatic reduction in noise level if I switched to a 2.5" system with muffler and cat?

Thanks

For reference, here's how the exhaust sounds from inside the car with windows down:

Just a quick update on this - I spoke to Lindsey, and they suggested trying to move the cat forward a bit and add a pre-muffler behind it. I've ordered the pre-muffler, and I'll post back here with an update on how that works out

pre-muffler as in a second muffler or a resonator?

either will probably help.

The cat actually does quite a bit of muffling, it also serves fairly well to filter the higher frequencies.

I think your car sounds great... plus, if you make it much quieter, you wont be able to set off car alarms in parking lots

The pre-muffler is a resonator, I believe. Lindsey Racing described it as a hollow chamber with baffling around the tube to eliminate resonance in the exhaust pressures.

Thanks Crackership - I like the sound too, so I hope that it won't change the tone too much, but I wouldn't mind it being just a little bit quieter sometimes (sometimes I don't mind setting off car alarms )

By the way, I think it sounds great but anyway, I have messed around quite a bit with exhaust systems for these cars (both Bursch and MSDS) and either a cat or a resonator would do well to quite it down - both would also work well. I built a 2.5 inch system SS 304 that bolts directly to the MSDS and it is actually pretty quite - except above say 5000rpm. I used a cat, resonator, and a magnaflow muffler. My other car has a Bursch and the exact same config and it is considerably louder.

straight pipe into hollow chamber resonator....

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SLE-310013919/

s pipe into large magnaflow. see the second photo on post # 68 here.

https://rennlist.com/forums/968-foru...lastics-6.html

it's just slightly louder than stock but sounds dozens of times better.

(need a very good exhaust man to make good bends or use mild mandrel bent pipe to make the tighter than stock curves to accomodate the space problem created by the big magnaflow).

therefore, a better option might be the same muffler but offset to opposite side offset.

this is the same center to offset muffler i'm running.
