Question oil pan gasket comparison

I've been watching with keein interest in oil pan gasket headaches. Most of them seem to be tied to the Victor Reinz gasket. What's the difference between that brand and other, i.e., OEM or anyone else who makes one? Are they all what appears to be soft rubber or compressed rubber foam core? Do they come in any other material?

I have used the Victor Reinz gasket with out any issues on 4-5 engines. I just did the pan gasket on my 88 Turbo S that I have owned since 1997 and old one looks idential to the new Victor Reinz gasket. I am assuming the old one was stock from 88 as I don't believe any of the PO's pulled the pan gasket.

I used an OEM one a year or two ago and still no leaks. Of course, it's much easier to do it with the motor out of the car and upside down

I used the Victor Reinz gasket. It's not too bad as long as the surfaces are clean and dry beforehand, and you have both dental floss and someone else to help you. I did it on a garage floor with the car on jackstands - no leaks yet.
