Default 87 Turbo Intermittent Starting/Tach Problem

Ok

My car has yet to fail me while driving but,

When I start it after 30min-8hours of sitting it takes 2 or 3 key turns (15 cranks)
If I wait 2 days or so, it takes 10 key turns and sometimes even an unplugged injector to run on three cylinders for a few seconds. Sometimes it even sputters a few times and dies after that before I can get it revved and ready

My tach also stopped moving entirely at once (are they related?)

I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator
I have installed a fuel pressure gauge and it passes the tests

Could this be related to the speed and reference sensors at all? The car drives fine consistently once started, so I was wondering if the tach and starting issue are related to those sensors

Also I was thinking of checking the DME relay to the pump to see if the pump is only intermittently being activated, but once activated, works as supposed to

Any help is great. I'm pretty sure I have read everything about these topics

Take the cover off the DME relay and checked for a cracked/cold solder joint. When the car takes a long time to start, do you have a tach bounce while cranking?....if not, reference sensor

Yeah, there's no tach bounce

I just didn't know if the engine would still run so well with a misaligned or broken reference sensor

I'll check the relay after work and get back to you. As for the reference sensor, probably this weekend.

Thanks again,

Johnny

So, can somebody explain to me the difference between the speed and reference sensors

I have read 100 threads on gapping, and what each one reads from (reference from flywheel set-screw, and speed from flywheel teeth)

But why have two? What is each one actually used for?

Thanks

Mine did something similar to this when I tried to first fire it up after a rebuild. I would definately check the reference sensors and make sure that bolt that holds the reference sensor bracket is all the way on and hasn't loosened.

Is the "DME computer plug" under Sensor Operational Checks: #2 referring to the large large plug directly on the DME or something else?

Thanks

Checked the resistance on the sensors and they are fine and haven't moved. DME relay looks good but I am going to try a known functional one. These cars
