Default Compressor shot. What are my options now?

Like the title says. What do I have for options? I saw that compressors are about $389.00 on Autozone online. Is that the cheapest option.

I just bought one off Ebay (after reading several other listers' doing the same) from CoolZoneACParts.

$230 is rebuilt compressor, expansion valve, dryer, comes correct oil in the unit, and free shipping.

Installing it this weekend. Hopefully all goes well.

Also the guy sends you a shipping label for your old compressor, and credits your $30.

If the compressor ate itself, flush the system before you install the new one and make sure you have oil in the system/compressor...

The compressor is slipping when it gets hot. They put a 1lb of r12 in it and the pressures looked good then BAM the clutch couldn't handle the heat. Sounds like my old 924S when the engine clutch went out. Couldn't handle the heat.

Have these been running for a while now? I don't want to put a cheap part on my car only to have to do the job again 2 years from now. That is the cheapest I can find.

I got the Ebay compressor, as well. Its been 2 years now, and it works fine here in the Vegas heat. I've talked to the seller on the phone, and he knows what he's talking about (which, to me, means he's doing good work).

So, another + for them.

EDIT --- Also, go get 2 universal AC o-ring kits from your parts store of choice.

Our compressors require 4 of the biggest (Can't remember the exact size) o-rings in the kit....but each kit only has 2 of them, so I had to buy 2 kits.

Where exactly do all the o rings go? I'm hoping to not have any leaks if and when I do this swap?

Another question is there anywhere I could rent a vacuum pump and gauges from?

The o-rings go everywhere there is a connection. The 4 large ones goes on the "plate" that attaches to the top of the compressor. The plate is the attachment point for the hoses.

Gauges can be found pretty cheap on ebay, as well. Get a good set of used gauges... Robinair (sp?) or similar. The gauges don't wear out, so as long as they appear to be in good shape (no cracks, or signs they've been dropped), then most likely, they are good to go.

If you have a good sized air compressor, you can get the cheap pump from Harbor Freight. It won't pull as high of vacuum, or for as long as a "real" pump...but if your system was only exposed to atmosphere for a short period of time (about the time it takes to swap the compressor), then it should do fine. Its how I did mine. I pulled a vacuum on my system for 5min, closed the valves on the gauges, and let it sit for a few hours with a vacuum. If it holds (26-27in), then you *should* be leak free. Some leaks only expose themselves under pressure, so the vacuum will hold...but its rare.

If its been exposed to air for a long time and/or you suspect leaks, AutoZone rents the "real" pumps that will pull a good 29-30in vacuum for hours. This will boil off any and all water that is trapped in the system.

Also, change out the receiver/drier while you're in there.... its easy, and cheap.

I don't have a compressor. I have one of those cheap low pressure gauge fill hose right now. I would like to rent since I hope that I only have to do this once.

Wish I wasn't heading south to Williamsburg for the weekend or I'd come by.

If you want the good internals out of my extra compressor and try a rebuild let me know or I might be interested in taking your busted one off your hands. I see it wasn't the climate control.
