Default 2011 Petit Le Mans questions...

I am contemplating going to Road Atlanta this year to watch AMLS run. Has anyone here ever went? If so, what should I expect with seating?

I would probably have a group of folks. I have looked at the tickets on Road Atlanta site, the 4 day pass seems a bit much....

Anyone with insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Highly recommend going, I have gone the past 4 years. The racing is unbelievable, the sounds are the best you will ever here, and the atmosphere around it is great, sort of like a large car show with the marques that are in the race (Ferrari, Corvettes, Porsche, Audi...).

I have only done the 1 day, which is basically a ticket to get into the event. Then once in, you can roam around to about any part of the track, including the paddock, throughout the day. During the opening ceremonies you are allowed on the front straight where all the cars are lined up.

The people there for multiple days camp, you'll see them in anything from sleeping in a car, up to a large RVs

Hope this helps

Haven't been to Petit Le Mans , soon though , Been to Rolex 24 , MotoGP in Laguna Seca , and inaugural MotoGP race at Indy , a number of events at NJMP , and I can tell you that a lot of time wasn't spent on seats , a lot of moving around to see the better views and corners .

Seating is a non-issue. The vast majority of time you'll be going from one viewing spot to another. Some spots have actual seats, some you sit on the ground, and some you hang on the chain link fence.

If you've never been to an ALMS race before, perhaps just take in the main race on Sat. The Thur and Fri schedule has a lot of support practice, qualifying and race events that you may or may not be interested in. If you do want to go multiple days, where are you going to stay? The vast majority of hotel rooms are either booked, or 20+ miles away. If you do go just Sat, you need to get to the track EARLY to avoid very long lines (only 2 ways into the track).

What other questions do you have?

Bring a couple camping chairs and walk around the track until you find a nice spot. It's a lot of fun!

we were thinking about going Fri/Sat and maybe camping, but will probably go to hotel. Not too worried about driving 20 miles to a hotel if i have to.

Thanks for the input everyone!!!

Well it looks like we are going to camp out. We are going to try to get to the track on Wed night if everyone can get off Thurs and Fri that way we can ensure a spot to camp...

What type of atmosphere can I expect in the campgrounds?

The best advice I got for last year was to rent a golf cart. If the weather is hot, you do not want to have to walk around the entire circuit, and the carts are located right at the track behind the Skip Barber. It is an amazing track, and a fantastic event which I plan on doing again this year.

The PCA has one of the best seating areas, on top of a hill at the end of the back straight and it is free to members. They also have a nice tent with TV, refreshments, and free stuff. There are many other good seating areas around the track too but be prepared to walk some pretty steep hills. Last year ther was over 100,000 people there, the most I have ever seen. Make sure you walk down on the grid just before the race, it is an unbelievable experience.

Cool......Haha.....NASCAR with foreign beers.....i love it...Yea it looks like we are gonna do the 4 day pass. What other racing is going on with the so called support races? I am a little unfamiliar and the AMLS site is a joke when trying to understand the series and what is going on.

John!!

We go every year.
Freakin love it!
Bring your own little folding seats - there is plenty of space and you can pick any corner you want.
We usually do the entire 4 day thing just because the rest of it is awesome as well.

There are tons of different races - Formula Mazdas, F2000, Porsche GT3 Challenge, SCCA Trans-AM, etc in the two days before the actual race. It is a non-miss!

Cya there!
