maybe double sided tape? Or some kind of adhesive... not ideal but I can't really think of anything else

I would try to find some tape that is thin and super sticky...

High temperature contact cement. Just make sure it is in the right place before you stick it down.

Should I take the original gasket off and then just glew it on the paint?

The crest on my car does not have screw post just straight posts with no threads. I have used a temp fix to attach it, do not ask me how. Now that I am paint the car I want a more permanent fix, has anyone tried thread this type of post? Last thing I want to do is break one off.

Oh and to the original post, please do not glue it down. That would be my last resort. Find some flat head screws and weld them to the badge if its real metal, drill the holes and bolt it down. I say this as a former cop, your crest may go bye bye with just glue. I would make it as difficult as possible to get it off by the bad guys.

3M makes some thin double-sided tape that won't hurt the paint, and can be removed with mineral spirits. I don't know how well it would stick to the gasket, but it's used on side molding made of similar materials.

I agree with Ross. I`ve used 3M two face tape many times.I worked for a company that produced Mass Transit vehicles. We used it everywhere. There are many different types. Some are like Scotch tape and others have a foam center with different thickness.
I think Lowes or HD has it.
Clean the mating surfaces with alcohol . Pre-fit , outline the position with a pencil or removable marker put the tape on the badge and install.A little trick we used to do was. Mix a very small amount of dish washing liquid and warm water in a spray bottle.Lightly spray the tape before final fit. It will give you some time to adjust if you missed the outline.Hold in place for a few minutes.

The 3m trim tape works really good. You can buy it at walmart where the paint/auto body stuff is. The tape is kind of thick, so you might not want to use the gasket. Its your choice, what looks better?

If you go to a real auto body supply or paint store, you'll see the thinner 3M tape.

Actually, if you haven't done it yet, those posts are supposed to be used with round push on nuts similar to tinnerman (rectangular) nuts that you can get at any auto parts store. I'd find the right size, push them fully on the back of the posts. Keep the gasket.
