Default 944 instrument cluster, stereo, and climate dead

A lot of electrical components on my 944 just randomly died all at once last night when I fired her up.

None of the climate controls work and the stereo head won't turn on. The instrument cluster (with the exception of the turn indicators) is dead. Speedometer, odometers, high beam lights, seat belt warning... everything.

Any ideas what the problem is? I checked the fuse for the instrument cluster and it was OK.

Possibly related: my car was sitting for 10 days in the rain while I was on vacation, and when I came back the battery (which is less than a month old) was completely dead.

sounds like the rain water has got into elecs and caused a short. sorry no idea where that would be but it will need to be sorted(dried out) before you can fix it or will just happen again. I am sure others will have ideas, but sounds like a fuse or fusable link or maybe a relay has blown

peace

I tried testing the relay by switching G2 with G13. No difference.

There are some leaves and pollen built up around the base of the battery from last week's storms. Could this affect it?

Also noticed this on the battery:

Not sure if it's always been like that.

I'd suspect the problem is in the ignition switch, since it seems that all accessories are dead.

That's a really nice photo. I'd rule out that loose-end terminal behind the fastener bolt...it looks like it was broken off a while ago. Still, where do you think that (add-on?) accessory terminal goes to...?

A day after the problem appeared it seems to have resolved itself. I turned on the car and a minute into driving all the instruments and controls came back on...

It's sounding like a problem relay to me. Even relays next door (not actually for the circuit affected) can cause gremlins like this if there is poor contacts and corrosion. First try pulling some relays and cleaning the contacts or using WD40 on them. I have the same sorts of issues with my 928 and I have had success from playing with relays. Eventually you may need to replace one or more.
