Don't know for sure, but I'm not the first one to have dug into the engine. I'd imagine that a timing belt broke at some point and the mechanic that "repaired" it didn't check all of the valves. I'll probably take the head to a machine shop to have them check the seats.

Picked up the head today. I had the machine shop cut the seat for the new valve as well as install the new valve guide. I should get the engine assembled tonight!

Ok, just to update this one last time: engine is fixed! Fired it up last night, and it was tap free!
So just a run down of that I did:
1) Repaired the bent intake valve
2)Replaced the warped camtower with a good tower
3) Replaced rod bearings while the engine was out (old were "normally" worn and showed good wear patterns)

Had a 944 sounding like a diesel - found nothing worth noting beyond the fact that the cam gear bolt appeared to be at a lower torque value than specified.
Tightened up and it has been fine since..
Worth checking I guess.

The camshaft/cam gear bolt has been upgraded. The old bolt should not be retorqued as it is designed to stretch-once. $2.75 Pelican

Well, I don't have a shop cost as I did the work myself. I spent almost $800 in parts ($460 for the clutch, $280 for headgasket kit, rod bearings and intake valve and guide, $60 in machine work, etc.) I wasn't expecting the clutch to be bad as it was only 2 years old. I think the disc was only replaced.
So for labor, you're looking at literally thousands if you're talking about the same amount of work I did. Just the clutch alone quotes 16 labor hours.
BUT, if you truly do have the same problem as I did, then you won't need as much labor since you can pull the head with the motor still in the car. I pulled mine mainly because I had the time and wanted to view the extent of the damage. I had a real suspicion the problem was in the head.

PORSCHE 944 ENGINE CLANKING SOUND LIKE DIESEL ENGINE NOISE
Please Help I have a clanking noise from my engine and it sounds like a diesel engine, the timing belt does rotate and so does the balance shaft belts, When I take out the spark plugs all cylinders push air through, the crank turns pretty easily with all spark plugs pulled and it will turn also when i spin the crank pulley with a wrench,

Burning Brakes
I would bet something Lifter/Valve related... Noise would have been worse when you increased the RPMS if it were Rod Bearing Knock...
Only thing you can really do it remove the Cam Tower and take a look...

Help
Sorry to revive an old thread, but this sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Can anyone confirm this is the exact same sound that was discussed here??
