Default Gas smell

I drove the car ('83 base 944) at about 3-4000 rpms the other day. parked it for an hour and a half. came back and there was a gas smell both outside and inside

anyone else experience this?

if so, any thoughts?

Gas smell is usually followed by "fire extinguisher smell"

I had a similar problem with a cracked injector. It would not leak until certain rpm/pressure. Start the car and look at the injectors close. Rev slowly and see if they get moist/wet/spray.

Also check the fuel lines where they come into the engine bay and fender.

I kept looking under the hood when I smelled gas and all the time it was at the opposite end of the car. Mine was the gas line to the fuel filter.

The gas was ozzing out at the fittings when the pressure built up. Then it started to drip and thats when I noticed it backing out of the garage the headlights caught the shine on the puddle one morning.

Here is picture before and one after the change. New fuel filter also -you know the ole "while you are in there" it's a virus.

Thanks for the info and pics. New to the 944/968 breed so I now have a place to start looking for my smell.

I had a intermittent gas smell which turned out to be on of the lines / fittings at the front of the fuel rail. It wouldn't leak all the time when it did it was quite a lot very happy it didn't catch fire.

The early 994s have a problem with cracks on the tank also........

http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/for...num=1294688376

Might be worth a look.

"In just about every early 944 and 924S the fuel tank is cracked in the same place.
We have the remains of over 170 944's yet I do NOT have a GOOD used tank, that should tell you something. "

Maybe your spirited drive made the tank angry at you.

My 924s still has a good steel tank, the problem it has was with all of the fuel lines from the filler neck and then up to the hard line running to the front of the car. The plastic mini tank thing on the top of the tank had old lines that were going too. It was well worth the effort to drop the transaxle and gas tank to fix it all.
