If he is using a waterpump quote from the dealer then that is where the price is coming from. I was ralking to one of the mechanics about the job I just completed on mine and he said he fif one not too long ago and the cost of the pump was $900 porsche list. I started laughing and said I used the OE Laso and spent about $250 for mine from a supplier on the web...

Not all 87 924S had the auto belt tensioner. I have both and 87 and 88 924S and the 87 did not have it. It was late 86 build car, but sold as a 87 in the USA and in many respects had alot of 86 parts on it including the 3 piece OPRV.

Check out ArnnWorx for the specialty tools. Between those and Van's videos you'll be in great shape.

Or, better yet, bribe one of the locals who already have the tools with beer to let you borrow them.

someone mentioned the some of the Porsche belts are being manufactured by Gates.

either way, they'll save you a lot and are probably just as good as oem.

If you're still considering having a shop do the work, call Eurosport Motors in Rockville, MD if it's not too far. Gus there has serviced my 944 several times, and he will get it done right the first time. It couldn't hurt to ask how much...

Thanks again for all the advice and support. By the way, despite my sticker shock on those estimates, I just want to point out that I think Tif's does great work. I've had them do work for me before, been happy with it, and recommended them to others. I haven't had work done by Island Imports, but a friend of mine regards them very highly.

Nobody gave me a hard time or anything, just saying . . .

Yes if you want a shop to do it, it should bill around 8 hours. $2000 is nuts. Find a shop that is friendly to 944 traffic, or specifically ask them about the billed hours. Are they all thumbs? Planning to take 2 days of solid work? I mean this job only needs $250 in parts. Then 8 hours at around $95/hour (common in big city) adds up to $1000.

i'm doing my belts again right now and the water pump....

I can see it costing 2 grand at a shop. 944 parts are exensive if you buy parts online like from paragon or pelican it is cheaper than getting it from the dealer.

i'm assuming you're also replacing the pump.

if you are replacing water pump belts oil seals rollers/ tensioners then parts will cost around 600-800 depending on where you get them and price on teh water pump.

and say 8 hours labour then it should cost around 1500-1600 plus taxes...

it's not difficult but time consuming. and if you're replacing the pump it does take a bit more time and you have to drian and refill the coolant.

also i'd replace everything including the front oil seals because you don't want to have it done again in a year when you have an oil leak on your belts or your water pump goes.

even if you do it yourself I don't consider it fun.

lol a 900 dollar water pump.

I put a laso new pump on my car 60k kms ago and the pulley has a slight woble in it now so i'm going ot replace it it was over 300 dollars I think online from paragon I think.

this time i'm going with a rebuilt from dealer......

balance belt is also like 300 for the porsche one from dealer lol.

i'm pretty dissapointed in the quality and price of some of the porsche parts. a water pump should not cost over 300 dollars. and it's not even a higher quality product. a water pump on a hyundai or kia probably lasts longer and they cost like 50 bucks.

I guess if you only replace the belts.

water pump adds a lot to the cost not in labour but in the cost of the pump if a new pump is being installed.

My local guys have managed to find the belts and rebuilt WP for mine for around $250 total parts.
Water pump should last through two sets of belts, so doesn't always need changing.

I got belts, front seals, rebuilt pump, rollers/ tensioners for 400. I got some of the parts from pelican and some from the dealer.

I paid $50 for the porsche belt though. if you get a reg gates ro conti it's way cheaper like 12-14 bucks.

if you don't want to do the job yourself maybe find a mechanic that works on porsches and buy your parts from pelican or paragon and bring it to the mechanic...c....... you'd save a lot.

Mark, Aaron, Doug, Pete and I managed to get her straightened out Yesterday!

Very nice example of a very early build 924S.. lots of interesting bits and pieces here and there...

And once we got the mother of all air bubbles out of the system she ran as advertised!

Can't wait to see this one at a GTG on the road..

Now Mark needs to get her all polished up so we can see pictures!
