Mystery 931 Flat Dish wheel
This is an offshoot of a related thread, where a couple of sharp eyes noted that the wheels on my car were atypical. Has anyone else seen a Flat Dish with a valve stem seemingly randomly drilled into the wheel? Most valve stems come through one of the "windows" in the wheels...
The part number, clearly here, is 477.601.026 B. It's a 16x6" wheel from my 1980 924 Turbo with the "S" performance package. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5053/...6b7cce2be3.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5051/...6b6e0ecb95.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5254/...34fcd6cfd1.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5214/...6fdeb8af7d.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5213/...150d8d0169.jpghttp://farm6.static.flickr.com/5254/...66cb45c67a.jpg |
I take back my original post about those wheels as I have seen another set. If I remember correctly Racerbvd had a set on Pelican some time ago. Don't think that he knew what they came off of though.
They do appear to be unusual. One other thing, I thought manholes had indentations on the back side of where they would become Clubsports if the material wasn't there. Am I wrong about this? Or could this have only been certain manholes that showed those indentations? |
hmm i have a set of 6x16 flats from a 931 but not sure about the valve thingy
have to check it out |
Are they forged?
|
flat dishes usually are. also, the part numbers are stamped, not cast, so I would think so.
|
16x6 is the classic max size 924 wheel. The 924s had them as optional too, I wouldn't be surprised if the 24 turbo got its own casting.
|
I had a set of 16x6 924 Turbo dishwheels. I never saw a large hole like that on them.
|
Is it me or do the top two pictures not match the next two? The top two show a large dia hole with a smaller dia hole inside. The second set show only the large dia hole from behind the wheel. What gives?
|
angle of the picture. the face almost floats on the rim...kind of odd. I took the pictures within the same five minutes on my living room rug.
You gotta understand, man, that rug really ties the room together. |

You're absolutely right about this. I have a set on my '44 and you can definitely see where if you were to machine the material away, I would have a nice set of club sports. Been thinking about doing that for a set of years now...
So what we have here is a crazy set of wheels. Any Porsche stamp on them? |
The last, right hand photo appears to have the Porsche "triangle".
Prettybird...love the Labowski referance. |
Very peculiar! I love a good mystery though. Hmm. I have a set of 6x16s, I'll have to see if I can check the part numbers on them...wonder if there was a supercession somewhere along the way...

If you click this link:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink You can see an example of 931 flat dish with the exact same part number as pettybirds...but the valve stem hole is not in the same location. Here's a link to a photo from the top side, show the location of the valve stem hole: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink I wonder if the really early examples were simply machined differently...they were forged after all, not cast... |

They must have changed the design at some point. Backside is totally different as per Pettybird's pic above. There is a set on eBay now. The picture caught my eye purely because of the valve stem. The openings appear to be narrower as well. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/jMYAA...2Dn/s-l500.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-1989-1990...BYP2Dn&vxp=mtr Seem like something the 924board would like. |
