Default shifter hard to move after trans replacement

Recently replaced transmision in my 83 n/a and now the shifter is very stiff and squeeks when moving between gears. everything works normally except the shifter operation. the tranny was a used unit and I left the linkage that came with it on because it all seemed in good shape. any ideas?

The bolt on the linkage might be too tight.

It's easy to get the foam in the tunnel jammed up (if you have foam left). Also the inner shifter boot can make it hard to grab certain gears, if it isn't "rolled" correctly.

The base of the shifter ****/rod has a round ball that pivots in a white plastic base. This plastic base has a saddle shape on the bottom that mates to the top of the torque tube. It is possible to get this saddle miss-aligned with the torque tube when cinching down the two shifter hold down bolts and this will cause the problem you describe.
