Default Knocking noise in rear end

Hi guys,

The other day I was driving my recently purchased 1989 944 non-turbo manual up a windy pass over the hills, and heard a loud knocking noise from the rear end. Slowed, accelerated away, and it happened again. Stopped, checked rear 1/2 shaft flange bolts etc etc and nothing obvious. But I was very surprised how easily I could move the rear of the transmission from side to side. Anyway, nothing obvious so carried on up slowly, no more nasty noises, descended a bit briskly no noises, drove the 100 miles home and no more noises. Wheels all tight etc.

Any clues?? Maybe loose transmission mounts?? I'm away for a couple of weeks, but thought I'd ask the 'brains trust' :-)

Thanks

Dave O

Bad trans mount (there is just one) sounds likely. Do a search on it, recently discussed along with alternative mounts.

Here are a couple of other ideas from a recent thread if not the mounts.

Could be a CV joint, I had a itermittent knock form a CV joint for quite a while, even had a 'porche' shop tell me it was the gearbox, no way it was a gear box noise so had another shop replace the CV joints and half shafts quicker and cheaper than rebiulding no problems.
