(this happened during an extremely busy work period back in 1994. i kept forgetting to check the oil even though i had been meaning to do so). the car was 6 years old.

oh wow. yeah I keep on hearing that you should change the water pump every second oil change (6 years) but I am pretty sure I have around 60k kms on my pump and 2 belt changes so far and this will be the third. I just change belts every 2 years as it's cheap and I like have a fresh belt on.

i've heard of pumps seizing but i'm wondeing how common this is. on most cars i've seen water pumps don't usually seize but start leaking when they go bad and most cars the water pump lasts over 100k kms.

so if I hae another 40k kms or another 2 years or so left on this pump I don't want to change it out for no reason.

lol. go to clarksgarage.com.

you need some special tools like the flywheel lock and belt wrench and balance shaft sprocket tool.

other than that if you take your time and follow the directions it's not hard but time consuming.

Gates is a very high quality supplier. I don't think that we've had any quality issues with any of their brands of belts.

Cool

yeah I knwo they are a trusted company. but the belt they sell as the porsche brand is different (rubber feels and looks different). I can't say thar it is stronger or not.

pelican doesn't carry the gates porsche belt so I went with the reg gates.

If you click on "More Info" on the part page, you will then see a popup with alternative brands. The Genuine Porsche one should be listed there.

ah crap too late now.

I also could not find the ecentric timing belt tensioner on pelican they only list the spring tensioner.....

when I ordered my parts I got everything to do the belt change minus the tensioner which i'm getting from the dealer now.

did I somehow miss that too?

We had some issues with our website last night - they are being fixed right now, so I'm not sure.

I will say, that I have used oem belts(as opposed to "Porsche")many times including my own car. I have never witnessed a faulty belt. I would however, have reservations about an "el cheapo" of unknown orgin. Pelican does not sell junk like some other suppliers may.

I have a question about the fly wheel lock? Why is it needed? I've only had my 944 for a month, and I'm about to do the belt and probably water pump in the coming weeks, as well as the lifters. My question is, why can't you just put the car in gear, set the parking brake, chock the wheels and torque off the crankshaft bolt? Is the tool used for alignment or something?

it's cus you need a lot of torque to get the crankshaft bolt off without the flywheel lock the crank might move.

Believe me, the flywheel lock makes removing that bolt much easier. IIRC, I tried the method you suggest once and the clutch slipped before the bolt broke loose. It can also be done with a pry bar wedged against ring gear teeth method but then it's a two man operation. I 'm sure some people have used the starter-bump method but not me....
