General comments:
Good solid 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo (951) has served me as a platform for cost-no-object mechanical improvement since I acquired it in 2005. I have put about 20,000 miles on it and drive it very little due to having several cars. It runs strong, straight, cooling system is tight and functions perfectly. I have focused on mechanical perfection in this car, focusing on engine, transmission, suspension and brakes. The paint has a few aesthetic issues from storage, zero rust. Shortly after I acquired the car, it succumbed to the well-known rod bearing #2 failure, likely a result of the previous owner running it low on oil. This prompted a full engine-out-of-car rebuild during which I replaced pretty much every “while you’re in there” part including the expensive clutch.
I bought this car in 2005 from a dealer in Denver, CO and had it shipped to Northern California where it has been since. There is no rust on this car, no crash damage and it is very solid. There are a few little things that don’t work as they should, all of which can be addressed pretty easily – I haven’t done it as they are not important to basic mechanical operation and they don’t get in my way. The leaky rear main seal is an annoyance and requires a big maintenance job (that I have done before so know) to fix so I have just lived with it.
I have many spare parts for this car, way too numerous to mention, including a rebuilt, ready-to-install spare engine (!) and yes a transmission too. I also have the parts to bring the engine back to factory intake specs (AFM, stock injectors, stock DME, etc).
The interior is very clean. The seats are the heavily bolstered Porsche sport seats, recovered in German vinyl. Interior color is linen. The only issue of note are some cracks on the top of the dash. These are common in 944’s and can be covered with a dash cover is desired.
Don’t miss the beautiful OEM 993 18” wheels !
This car has dyno’ed at about 300HP at the rear wheels and it is tuned a little rich to protect the motor, so expect with some tinkering on the laptop (using the Perfect Power SMT6) to lean it up a bit, you could get an exta 20-30 HP out of it. There is also a Innovate LC-1 wideband O2 sensor to help with this. Drivability-wise, this car is a power monster. As expected with the K27/8 turbo, boost builds a little later that the stock K26, around 3500rpm, but it pulls like a freight train to redline. The Vitesse MAF kit has been specifically tuned by John at Vitesse for my combination of parts.
Take a look below to get more detail on the car, including all the things that have been replaced in the last 20,000 miles/5 years. Focus has been on engine, suspension and brakes and pretty much everything has been replaced or refreshed in those areas. I have probably forgotten to mention something that has been replaced, so if there is an area you are worried or curious about, please inquire.
Current mileage is about 95,000.
