Post odometer, starter questions

Two different things happened today. My starter clicks once with the first turn of the key, but ALWAYS cranks normally with second try. I replaced the starter about 2000 miles ago. Second, my odometer stopped working today (85,070). Anyone got any ideas on the starter? Odometer? I imagine the odometer is driven from the speedometer.
Thanks!

Starter could be bad wiring connections or the solenoid. I'd first pick solenoid - it arcs once and then connects good enough on second try or is dirty and sticky from clutch dust. That is cheap enough to just replace.

Odo might be the plastic gear. You go and press the trip reset when the car was rolling? If so, that is your problem, for sure.

Nope, didn't press the trip reset (know about that one),suspected the gear not sure how easy a fix it is. Starter was a rebuilt starter and it's possible the solenoid is going bad. I did install a new amplifier in the car yesterday, but it is fairly low power, (90 watts) so I don't really suspect a current draw. Thanks for the reply!

If you just did work on it, especially new amp, then I would start looking hard at what you did.

Your car does have the 115 amp alternator so you can support a fair amount of current draw.

Listen to Slevy about the Odometer. I got the gear from him last week and I put it in. the directions were perfect! After about 3 times of tearing it apart and putting it back together it started to work. (it must have not been screwed together tight enough) My odo. works but not my trip odometer...strange. but I am not going to take it apart again now that it works!

Well........even more bizarre, the odometer and tripmeter started working normally again today. Starters still flunky though, maybe I'll give it a few days and it will fix itself and I'll name the car Christine.....

About the starter problem, in addition to wiring, the points in the plastic ignition /electrical switch can get burned, causing a poor contact. You can isolate the problem by hooking up a remote starter switch and seeing if the behavior changes. If so then check the voltage from the ignition in start position at the solenoid --Roy--

I'll have to be double checked. You have have the reset plunger off a bit or maybe something binding the lower gears.....

The plunger may be the problem. I will leave it alone and see if it rights itself.
