Depends on how lazy I'm feeling, but I do it most of the time.

I do it ALL the time but as for double clutching I don't. Porsche even installed sync. on their race cars.

I find that in spirited driving at the very least I have to rev match. Otherwise, when I let the clutch out (say, shifting from 3rd to second) the rear tires lose grip as they try to bring the transmission and engine up to the new higher RPM. Very scary feeling, so now I always at the very least will rev match. (not very good at double clutching or heel-toe.)

Every time I drive anything with a manual trans I heel toe. I always double clutch downshifting to 2nd or 1st gear.

i seem to be a "side of the foot/ toe"
...like others i kind of just roll my foot on to the gas when i brake, just to rev match. if i didn't rev match then downshifting to accelerate would actually a slow down THEN speed up manuveur

so what do you gain from double clutching. why do most racers use it? wouldn't that decrease acceleration times?

'so what do you gain from double clutching. why do most racers use it? wouldn't that decrease acceleration times?"

I can't imagine it would provide any benefit at all in today's modern trannies with synchros. Sure you might be able to extend the life of the synchros, but at a cost of a lot of time per lap.

As to the original question heel & toe, I do it all the time. Especially on taking off on hills. I just keep my toe on the brake, and ease over to the pedal with the outside of my heel and give it a little gas as I ease up on the clutch. When I feel it grab, I slow down the clutch foot, give it a little more gas and ease off the brake. No back-slipping on the hill and no parking-brake usage needed. Got quite good at this and I can get around San Francisco anywhere without needing to the use the parking-brake to take off on a hill.

I also do it on the street... makes the driving a bit more fun
Except when I'm driving my old Civic -79

When it comes the double clutching it makes the downshift so much smoother. Perhaps it's not necessary on the track, but it definatly makes the driving smoother and "better" when driving on the street.

I've always heel-and-toe'd since I first learned how to do a couple years ago. As for double-clutching... I've never really given it a fair chance, really. Now that I'm hearing it's not only much better for the 2nd gear synchros (99% of the time they seem to be the first to go, anywho), but it also makes the downshifting even smoother? I guess when I get the tires tomorrow I'll start trying it for 2nd and 1st downshifts and see how I like it. Who knows, even if I don't think it makes all that much of a difference I might stick with it because it's a good technique to practice!

Everywhere I go in the 951, which, BTW is on the way back from the crunch with the guardrail during the last snow.

You've got that wrong. Racers don't use it. You've been watching too much Fast & Furious.

Even before the advent of the current F1 style gearboxes professional racers didn't even use double clutching as it's unnecessary and a waste of time.

I heel and toe all the time. Can't stand a car in which I can't. Just feels WRONG!

I also left foot brake a lot - in rallying you LFB to get the tail hung out and actually steer through a sweeper in a drift - balancing the car with the brake and throttle. The MOST fun you can have in a car (while it's moving).
