Post Odometer

The odometer on my '83 944 works fine when the car starts. After 10-20 miles it seems to stick. Is the gear broken? Anyone experience this?

Since the O-Do-Meter is driven from the front left spindle you may need to pull the wheel and check that the square end of the cable is sticking though the grease cap and has the little clip on it.

You can reach behind the spindle and grab the cable sheath to move it in and out.

Thanks, I'll give this a shot. i wonder why it is working when the car is cold, though? Oh well, just another Porsche "mystery". How many miles on your '83?

the little gears are friction fit. Maybe when it is cold the gear doesn't slip ?

Must have close to or over 200,000 miles but my O-Do-Meter gave up at a little over 82,000 miles. Speed-O-meter works.

As Der Cupmeister mentions there is a plastic gear that gives up and needs replacing. Have to use an old can opener to get into the speedo.

One of these years I have to replace it.

There is a lot of chatter in the archives on this. The plastic gear does fail and one way rto totally destroy it is to reset the trip odometer while the car is moving. Don't you wonder what the designer of that little part was thinking that day?

One lister has those little replacement gears for sale.

OTOH, I stripped an 80s vintage Audi speedo and lo and behold..the works were identical...Fancy that!!!

Cheers!!

Sounds like it's ready for eBay.
