I have an 84' 944. when I bought the car it had some funky wire rigging set up in the engin compartment. Of course i had to investigate, and decided to clean up all this jerryriggin up. after cutting out this wiring, which by the way most was just a bad fan switch bypass to have the fan run when it gets hot, (lazzy and cheap) I noticed that there was some burnt wires. The wires where comming from the starter to the altenator. I took the harness out and rewired it exactly as it should have been from jumpstart. next thing I know the after driving it for 30 min. the car would not restart. jump the battery, not problem, and again car would not start. go out and buy new battery. samething. pulled altenator out had check no problem, but just the same had the altenator serviced, new brushes, and voltage reg. put in, put altenator back in same problem, no charging, pin point the problem down to eh blue wire on the altenator not energizing the altenator to turn on to charge, I was in the process of moving, so i just jump the wire to get it to charge, but not right and needs to be corrected for proper wire right? once I got to my destination, I sent it into the shop, shop man tells me he traced the blue wire to the fuse panel and from there it turns into a blue/white wire the runs into the radio relay harness. the stock radio was removed and replace with an aftermarket unit the 8 plug harness was not used, shop man is not sure, but thinks this has something to do with the problem, possibly the 8 pin harness needs a relay in place of the stock radio to complete the circuit for charging, no clue at this point, but from reading wiring diagrams, it all does lead to a radio relay of somewhat, also my speed odometer is not working which seems to be on the same wiring line as this radio relay, any help or suggestion would greatly be helpfull. please email if you have a quick solution thanks circa2011@ceva.net

The speedo shouldn't have anything to do with your charging problem. The speedometer (mechanical) runs off of the left/front spindle on the early 944's.
