Thumbs down Help with Paint

I have an area behind the passanger window that looks like where they removed tint from the hatch and the solvent dropped on to the paint and ate through the finish. It left an area about 3 inches by 6 inches.

What can I do to protect the paint in this area?

Thanks. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

That sucks man. There are a few things you can try, but it all depends on what really happned to the paint (discolored, removed, thinned).

What color is the car?

It's black.

I tried to take a picture but it didn't show up in the pic.

It looks like all the "gloss" is gone. The color still matches but you can see the area. I'm afraid it will bleach with the sun and effect the paint.

Get some light polishing compound and a terry cloth. I would use 3M Finesse It or Perfect It. It is not cheap stuff, about $50 a bottle. You could ask a local paint shop if you can buy a dabble of some of theirs for a couple of bucks. Most likely, they will give it to you.

Anyway, rub that in slowly and see if the paint glosses up or gets lighter. If it lightens up, stop. This means that there is too much paint gone and you will be going into the primer.

If it glosses, go over it a few times with the compound until it is nice and shiny. Wax it and you should be fine.

If you do not get the gloss to come back, and it does not get lighter, you can wet sand the area and buff it out. In this case, it is most likely a stain, although hard to stain black paint.

Try the compound and let us know. If you cannot get the 3M compounds, you can try other commercial tins of light rubbing compound at most parts stores. They are gritty, so be careful.

Good luck.

Thanks,

I will try the 3m compound, I have used other rubbing compounds before and have had good and really bad results. Kind off afraid to use this time. My one true love and all.

I don't think its a stain. Paint is clean just no finish. Like it ate through 14 years of wax.
Maybe I can wax it 15 times and it will be alright. Ya right.

Thanks again, <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
