Angry Broken Driver's Side Mirror Mount

DAMMIT...Closed my car door (not even hard!), hear an odd clank, and found my side view mirror had broken. Seems to have broken off wear the actual mirror mounts to the piece that mounts to the door...Anyone ever heard of this happening? This appears to be all one unit...? Ideas for repairs? I'd like a simple fix, though that seems unlikely. If I need to buy an entire new mirror it seems it would make sense to go to the much-tastier 968 teardrops...Any thoughts or experienes? Thanks!

Well, I've never heard of a mirror just breaking off. Looks like you need some Aero mirrors my friend!

I agree 968 mirrors is the way to go if you're going to replace it

There is a hollow bolt and a spring that holds the mirror together. The bolt backed out of the housing. That is why the mirror fell off. If you have the bolt and spring (they should be int he base). All you need to do is remove the base, then take the parts, align them as they should be and tighten the hollow bolt. It is really difficult, I used a vise and a towel to hold the upper half of the mirror and used a wide blade screwdriver to tighten the hollow bolt. Good Luck.

Hey PeteL...Thanks...I wound up discovering this myself. However, I've not yet fixed it. The issue seems to be the spring tension is a bear and trying to do the job with out completely disassembling the mirror is gonna be a bitch. I have attempted to follow the directions from Clarks Garage to remove the actual mirror, mirror motor, etc, etc, but CANNOT seem to get the bayonet mirror mount to release the glass, regardless of how hard I try. Perhaps I'll take another run at it tomorrow using your suggestion. Thanks!

The bayonette release is tough. I have had limited luck using that little hole at the bottom of the mirror. What I usually end up doing is pressing the top of the mirror all the way in, and then using a small screwdriver, moving the bayonette release. With the bottom of the mirror all the way out, you can see what you are doing.
Good Luck.

Photos available in the 968 Mirror Upgrade in my sig. There is a section on removing the original 944 mirrors that should help.

Thanks Keith...I've looked at your highly detailed and well put together sight - I truly appreciate it! Unfortunately, I'm guess I'm a ******** and am still struggling with the mirror...Can't get it to release...Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Can you tell if the bayonette fitting moved? It only moves maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Then you just gotta believe and pull on the mirror glass. It is pretty well stuck in there, it will almost seem like an air tight seal is being broken. Before you pull, just be sure that the bayonette moved. It will come off.
