Post I want WHEELS!! but can't afford them

They are just not in the budget in the near term. Maybe in 6 months.
But my little '87 NA is mechanically pefect (Uh oh, the Porsche gremlins probably heard that). Cosmetically a 9 in and out and it needs wheels. Already refinished the PD's- they look as good as they can.

Where did you guys get your rims? I keep looking for a deal on C2's or 993's - really don't want anything else(except Fuchs but they won't fit - I've got late offset).

After my success with the PD's I'd even be willing to refinish some less-than-ideal ones if they are straight.

Where'd you get yours, how cheap is "cheap"?

I have early offset 993 copies from Discount Tire. They're made by Frank Hartman, I believe. About $225 per wheel 3 years ago. HTH.

Thanks Michelle,
I just went to Discounttires.com and checked.

They're now up to $259 and $269 for 17x7 and 17x9 respectively. In the end I may do it your way, though everyone always cites the replica wheels as heavier. I doubt I'd notice in my NA. It's not like it's fast anyway. Didn't notice if they offer painted center caps though? Would factory painted caps fit the replicas?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but centercaps are centercaps and I think they fit just about anything. As far as the painted stuff goes, you can do that yourself! I did mine and they turned out great, all you need is some Testors model paint from your local friendly Superwalmart. Otherwise, I think they cost around $60 a apiece!

you can buy 16" rims for around $400. the 17" variants you can buy for $600-700 if you shop around long enough, and are not choosy about cosmetics. do not pay $1000 plus for imitations - buy a nice set of OEM wheels for the same amount of money.

I just sold a set of really nice OEM 993 take-offs from a '95 993 with 40k miles. They had tires but the rears were very weak. I only asked $600 for the whole shooting match, but that was sans center caps. Keep an eye on the classifieds, they come up from time to time. You could also sell your PDs on ebay. I just sold a decent set of those on ebay for $250 with weak tires, but they were 16". Good luck!

If you are planning to dump $600-700 into new wheels, I would just go with someone like HRE who custom makes everything anyway. You can get the widths and offsets you need and have em polished, painted, or whatever.

I know this is so un-Porsche, but Im not a fan of pretty much any of the Porsche OEM rims outside of the Fuchs. Id take cookie cutters over some of the newer stuff. I guess Im old school??

It depends on the kind of 944. IMHO the best-looking OE wheels on the non-turbo nosed cars are indeed the fuchs and even the cookie cutters for the really early cars.

On the turbo nosed I prefer the C2Ts aka "Cup1s"
Real C2Ts are very expensive, but Mille Miglia replicas are regularly advertised from Tire Rack for $1K including tires, which is a great deal even though they're heavier than OE. Heck, I just paid $1K for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport tires here in Europe.

For an 87NA, my pick would be a decent set of fuchs replicas, myself. Maybe I'm old school too

The PO of my car got some 2000 17" 996 twist wheels off a friend who upgraded once he wore out his first set of tires. Maybe not the best looking set of wheels, but OEM Porsche, modern, fairly light and easy to clean. He paid Can$1,000 (about US$700 at the time.) Lots of Boxsters running almost the same wheels; see if you can talk one of them into upgrading so that you can have their take-offs.

I put some 17" boxter wheels on my turbo looks like 996 twist wheel. Paid 600 with tires on ebay. I have early offset and they don't look right.

You definetly WILL notice the weight of the non-factory wheels in your NA. My car feels like I gained 30hp when I switch from my 17" C2 replicas to my 16" fuchs. The tires and aspect ratios are correct, so it is only a matter of weight and not wheel/tire diameter.

The difference is very noticable, IMHO. If you had a 300hp turbo, I think you would notice less of a difference....

tifo, your fuchs wheels look extremely nice on your car. I had to give in to C2Ts on my '91 951 but made sure they were OE... I've heard the replicas are real porkers!

I paid through the nose for those factory part numbers stamped on the inside, but they're about the same weight as my previous 16" D90s.

The different was huge when going from some 55lbs for the rear, 50lbs for the front wheels back to my club sports at 46lbs rear 44lbs front. The main difference that I really noticed was STEERING EFFORT...I could hear the power steering straining...and even with power steering it was far more difficult to crank the wheel when moving slowly than with the other wheels.

Acceleration wise, I noticed a bit of a difference.

Stay relatively light

I've got a set of polished OE dish wheels from my 928 for sale. 16 inch, tires are there, but need replacing. Email or PM if you're interested.
