The link to the tranny oil change procedure isn't working now...

Anyways, today I noticed it in the 3rd to 4th upshift too. I didn't notice it before because I just drove it to school which is about 1 mile away and the speed limits are only 35. Anyway, it seems to be the same feeling. No problems downshifting. There was a little grinding going into 4th one time today, but I think it's just because my shoe was wet and slid up the clutch.

I dunno. I hope to god it's not the clutch. I just got done with a $1400 repair bill and there's no way I could even parts and do it myself. I'll see how it drives this weekend, and then next tuesday I'm bringing it into my school's shop. I'll change the tranny fluid then, and have the teacher (who owned/ operated his own shop for years) take a look at it. Keeping my fingers crossed...

Procedure is really straight forward.
Follow Hans advice.

Pelican Parts sells a tool for the plugs. Kind of expensive like 20 bucks for a socket. Still cheaper then having someone else do it.

Just be sure and remove the fill plug first!!!
Been their done that until midnight! On a sunday. What a bitc! that was. Anyway it is an easy procedure.

You can get gallon of Swepco for 40 bucks. Still kind of expensive but worth it.

and always Good Luck.

I found this post in the archives:

"I just got my 86T with 85k on it... I have noticed something that might be strange when I shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. I can start in 1st no problem however if I go from first to second (clutch fully depressed) it seems as if I'm catching a spinning gear just a bit before I engage fully into second gear, the clutch is depressed fully the entire time. The same goes when i shift from 2nd to 3rd, sometimes I will "catch" a spinning gear. I assume the problem is me not being used to the car yet, only had it two days. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks.
"

That describes my problem *exactly*. So hopefully it is just bad transmission fluid. How long does this job take? If I do it at school, I ahve access to a lift and a room full of tools, but I'd only have an hour to do it. Think I could get it done? I'd be able to have a few people helping, and the teacher who has 30+ years experience.

Thanks for the help everyone!

An hour is plenty of time.

Just be sure you have some way of getting the new fluid in the transaxle. I used a big surenge. (I don't think I spelled that right) Not much space up their.

It really is easy. But then again with these cars the easiest job can be a SOB!!

You plan on an hour and it takes you all fu!kn day. Maybe thats just me.

Anyway you should not have any problems at a school shop doing this job.

You can try taking off the driver-side rear wheel to have almost direct access to the fill plug. the syringe trick or a flexible hand pump would then be perfect...
