Post torque tube input shaft too short?

Putting a '91 944 S2 back together. Intalled the new clutch and rebuild torque tube. Got to the rear of the transmission and i could spin the torque tube shaft!. With it in the clutch i shouldn't be able to turn it. So I pulled the tube back out. It looks to me like the shaft at the end that goes in the bellhouing/clutch is too short. The S2 don't use a "sleeve" on the clutch end, but does on the transmission end. Does anyone know what length the shaft is suppose to be that extends out of the tube going into the bellhousing? Anyone got a tube laying around that can do a quick measurement from??

Thanks.

it might not be that its too short. that shaft can move back and forth thru the tube. you might just have to hit the other end with a hammer to get it out enough on the other side. when i replaced my torque tube i had to do that. except the opposite way. for me i had to hit the end the goes into the clutch so the hole in the sleeve for tighting the bolt would be aligned. i hope that maybe helps.

thats what i figured. If it was MY car I would, but i'm doing this job for a customer and he paid someone to rebuild this tube. I think i'll let him hit it..*grin*. I hope someone knows how much is suppose to be extended out toward the clutch so i can tell him for sure that's the problem.

This is a part of the write-up Martin did on rebuilding the TT.

After installing all four check the shaft end is still 49mm +/- 0.5mm from
the edge of the gearbox end bellhousing

That is the correct spec from the factory manuals, I suggest using bolts or levers to pull it in to the right spot, hitting it can damage the ***** in the bearings, so don't hit it unless you have to.

The tube I just took out of my parts car, '83na, measures 5.8 inches from forward face of bellhousing mount flange, to the very end of shaft. I don't know if tubes are the same, but maybe this can help?
