Post Ever wonder why your Odometer didn't work?

Mine broke week before last. I pulled it and noticed the shredded rubbery gear. It falls apart in your hands. I quickly replaced with a KLA unit. Wow, $40 bucks for a gear the size of my thumbnail. I'm sure it has everything to do with the cost/little customer need for the gear so I don't feel ripped off. $40 is cheap compared to a car with no odo. Also, whomever I spoke to at KLA was great. Kudo's to them!

BTW, I'm amazed at how easy it would have been for me to change to mileage of the car.

The easiest way to change it would be not to fix the odo (til you sold it)

BTW did you see anything in there, while you had it in pieces, that might fix the 'trip' odometer???

The new gear also fixed the trip odo for me.

If you are asking if there are some failure points in there that I saw here's my take:

1) screw gear which actually drives the replaced gear. Made of better plastic but looks like it drives the whole assembly.
2) There is a plunger assembly that swivels and moves left to right. If has to go in the receptical just right when re-assembling the speedo.
3) The plunger within the air vent has to activate a electical switch that resets the trip odo. Actually I was suprised at this b/c I always figured it was a mechanical apparatus that reset it. Anyway, that switch has to be positioned just right. It is keyed but it wouldn't be hard to pull it out of the key slots. If it's not in the key slots then the trip odo will not reset.

Just an age old reminder for you new guys-don't press the trip odo while moving. It will shred that gear. Then again, if you do want to keep the milage down.....

ELLSSUU,

Glad everything worked out fine. Remember, $40 is also alot cheaper than sending your speedo to someone to be repaired who will charge $120-150.

Thanks very much.

Nice to see another BR/NO area P-car owner here...
Stay tuned, we've been considering some type of get together in the area.

What next...you gonna rebuild your trans next...?

I haven't yanked the intake yet. I don't have a compressor set up and I not sure I want to hand do it.

You gonna be at the shop one of these weekends? I'm also thinking of ordering a boost guage to get a better picture of what the car is doing. Think there's any reason to do a AF while I'm there?

I carry the phone unless I'm out of range or something. Thanks for the "thumbs-up" on customer service. We're not out to screw anyone. How long have you had your car. Don't think I have seen it around town. What color.
