Questions about a 944 purchase..

From your description it seems you would spend far more on repairs than you would to buy a car that did not need those repairs. I would think that you are looking at literally thousands to bring this car up to snuff.

I definetly wanted a "project"- I didnt want to spend 5K on a much nicer one and still spend the obligitory 1 grand + anyway. I will definetly save the cash up front, and I've been thru most of the niggling problems on mine already. My labor is free to me.
I thought i listed the miles- sorry. Odo shows 83,7xx miles, and the engine bay looks correct for the amount of miles- Seems that over 150K miles the engine bay aluminum takes on a really worn appearance.
I'm not afraid of the work that has to be done- I OK with wiring- and interior work- The windshield I'd have replaced by a glass shop. It would be my first attempt at water pump, belts, clutch (if need be) and the things I would want to replace right away.
Seeing as I wouldnt have to rely on it as a daily driver I'm OK with having it out of commision for a few weeks at a time. I'm at $2500 with him right now- And I've already given him a brief but pricey list of what service would need to be done immediately to make it roadworthy. i.e.- able drive it home.
What I wont tell the seller---
I am impressed on how well it runs- strong and stable. Engine- drivetrain seem in very good shape, which impressed me into thinking the odo is showing actual miles. It runs and idles better than mine,It runs as well as 944's I've seen going for 2-3 times what he's asking.
So the Negotiation continues. I'm setting up a longer test drive for tomorrow..

Sounds like you have already made up your mind to buy it so good luck...but I still think it is too expensive at $2500. Especially if you've never done timing belts, water pump, seals, etc. and especially clutch, that is a big job.
However, you are right that if you spend $5000 for a better overall car you will likely STILL spend $1000+ in the first year (month?) on "stuff".
It's the nature of the beast with Porsches.

I think he has kind of made up his mind and I'm afraid I may have influenced him a bit. I fell in love with it the minute I saw it. Under all the grime is an ugly duckling waiting to be transformed into a swan.
I'm sure he'll call it "his" project, but he has a helper here as often as he'll let me. I'm no mechanic, but I think I did okay painting the lug nuts?!?

I don't proclaim to know a thing about these cars, but I am learning. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part but the worst thing seems to be the appearance. I know there will be "real" work to be done on it as with all cars of this age and caliber - especially if they've been neglected.

Chris's Chick, you're too cool. Any way you can bottle some of that enthusiasm and send it to my wife?
If you guys get it, take some good pictures before you start on it, so we can see the restoration to it's full effect.

I think the oil pan gasket was blown tonite.. Oil is everywhere, I blew thru 3 qts of Mobil 1 on the 25 mile trip back here- luickily I carry 6 qts of oil with me..The garage floor has a nice coat of "mrs. butterworths" on it.......
