If you have an Autozone near you, they have a tool loan program and you don't have to buy anything. You just pay a deposit that you get back when you return the tool.
Good luck,

Harbor Freight sells spring compressors that will do the job that are quite inexpensive. As for your initial question, attempting to disassemble a strut without a spring compressor can result in very serious injuries and even death. If you do not have a Haynes manual get one. Believe it or not, the 924 manual contains a complete process. The 944 refers the VERY SAME process to "the experts" (go figure). Haynes will e-mail you a copy of the process (at least they did for me, but that was a few years ago) It is do-able and not dangerous as long as you exercise common sense and take your time.
Good luck

Yeah, but "you didn't hear it from me"... or, my "mother's brother's wife's cousin's uncle's monkey said you can":
- jack up the front, support with stands
- use jack to lift control arm approximately 2"
- remove top strut nut (22mm deep offset box wrench, use allen in top of shaft to keep from spinning)
- very slowly let jack down (stand to the side, just in case)
That all said, you really should be able to find a source for renting or loaning the tool.
Good Luck!

The last time I have seen someone doing this, three fingers from his right hand were permanently cleared away from the remainings of his right hand!!!!
Sure, he made the mistake to try and guide the strut on the way out, not realising the enormous force that is available from the semi compressed front springs.
Nevertheless wrenching is a lot more difficult since then......
BTW: the spring made it through the fender, repair cost for the body work was a multiplication of the cost for shock replacement
Bottomline: GET THE SPRING COMPRESSORS OR DONT DO THE JOB!!!!!

(I realy mean it this time)
