finally figured it out
my 944 problems are finally solved. i admitted defeat and brought it in to autosports unlimited in zeeland,mi. they hooked up a dme unit from another porsche (6 cylinder) and said the car started and ran but not smoothly because it was for a different engine. so now i have to find a dme for an '84 944 somewhere and my problems will be over. i just purchased a '70 911t and i'm going to pick it up next weekend in ohio.

I don't know how handy you are but some Rennlisters have taken the time to pull apart the DME and then reflow ALL the solder joints on the boards in the DME,the cost is nothing other than time and patience, just a thought.Good luck.

I just did this myself on my 84 944. I had 2 dead DME units and both failed in the same spot.
There is a small resistor near the external connection that is obviously the weakest link. It was burned and charred quite an area on the motherboard around it also.
I took pictures of the entire process and will be drawing-up a document that should help others wishing to try this. I'll try to get something put together today and post it here.
If this isnt an option for you, then www.vertexauto.com has the cheapest price on DME's that i was able to find online.
