Oil questions
I am getting ready to drop my oil pan because of low oil pressure problems (think the pickup is faulty) but I have a question. the problems all started when I changed the oil to synthetic 10w-30. origanaly had dino oil....I only drive in summer and drive kinda wild. Looking at other post seems like every one is using 20w-50. Could this be a problem? I took the car out today for the first time in a long time and it ran fine for a while and then the pressure would drop (red warning light) at stop lights and the lifters would start to clang but when the light goes green and I take off the pressure goes back up. could a fualty oil filter cause this too? I would realy love this proplem to be my oil weight than have to drop the oilpan. It just seems like if it was the oil pick up it would be more consistant. I only have no pressure when at idle(not all the time) or slowing down really slow. Thanks for any help....

Dan, I've noticed a considerable drop in oil pressure since switching to 10W30 Redline... but not to the extent you speak of. Have you replaced/checked the oil relief valve... sounds like a commmon *partial* failure mode?
My hot oil pressure drops to 2.5bar at idle, but runs up to 4.5 and above during acceleration and cruising.
Good Luck!

That is the same problem I have been having.
I filled with 8 quarts of dino, and the red lights stopped. It seemed like the oil was sloshing away from the pickup tube when I was deccelerating. Now that I am a bit full, it seems to have stopped.

maybe I will try the 8 quarts of dino too...I read some other guy had the same exact problem too. I did take apart my relief valve before and it was a few pieces with o-rings(had a non porsche guy clean it). Mybe it is really picky and I should have just replaced it. thanks and keep me posted ...thanks all...of to get some oil and filter...

That sounds like the old 3-pc valve. The new one is a bit more reliable.
8 quarts sounds like too much oil. You should never fill above the line... but, it's not a good thing to be below the line either. Porsche issued a TSB on this overfilling problem.
Maybe check the seals on the oil cap and the dipstick to be sure they are working properly. Oil-pressure should not be dropping to nothing at_any_time.
Some faulty oil lights (especially intermittent and associated to vehicle movement) are caused by poor connections or grounding of the wires against each other or the block (check the routing)
Good Luck!

I think I will get the pressure relese valve...just hate to spend that money not knowing it it is 100% of the problem(how about a used one). How much could the dipstick affect the pressure? my old dipstick tube cracked and I got a used one to put on and it is not super tight in there. thanks again all...dan
