Post loud exhaust

My car has the cat removed, and the exhaust is quite loud. But when the sunroof is off and i get cruising at about 50 and faster the howl is so loud i cant even hear the engine or stereo, It feels like i have two 15inch subs behind me blasting away. I was wondering if all 944 are like this or is it because of no cat.

Mine didn't, just got a slight rice resonation at 3400 but quit at just under 4000. I'm assuming your removed ONLY the cat and put a pipe in place, if you removed the cat and every thing behind it (or just left it out) then those "15's" are going to hit pretty hard.

If you did remove the cat and installed a straight pipe, you may need new bolts/nuts...I removed/installed the exhaust system when I changed the clutch, and I had to buy new exhaust bolts/nuts because the old ones wouldn't tighten down (thus creating a huge leak). Try this, while under power reach back and place your hand on the hump in the back (where it is still carpeted). Feel around the sides, if there is a vibration and/or HEAT...you probably have a leak...
I was actually pulled over when I drove the car for the first time like this (just taking it around the block to make sure the clutch job went okay)...cop said 'this isn't nascar'....I sure as hell hope not was all I was thinking.

i feel you on the exhaust...

i got msds headers and ran a straight pipe from that to a cheap *** muffler...

i have 2 12's in the back of my 944, and if you blast them and stand outside the car, you cant hear the music...

what im going ot do when/if my engine gets done, install a high flow cat back on and run it 3 inches to a better looking setup...

I punched-out my cat after i installed a Bursch cat-back exhaust (which makes plenty more sound compared to stock, 86 n/a). It only made the car a little louder, not so much that i couldnt still enjoy my stereo with the volume still reasonably low. I imagine using a cat-bypass pipe rather than hollowing out the cat would make things louder still, but sounds like you have another problem. I cant imagine that much low noise with everything connected properly and a stock muffler. If you do have a leak somewhere you may be able to spot carbon deposits after you've driven it a bit -unless its truly unbearable to drive, that is.

This may seem ghetto to most of you but instead of putting a straight pipe in the place of the cat put a glasspack muffler. They are only like $30-$40. They will lower the sound of the exhaust, but it will not restrict the flow.
