Question Newbe question

Hey there, I have been learning about Porsches, particularly the 944 line for a while now. The one question that I cant get an answer for is, what do the number desiginations mean, such as 944. Are they just random numbers that sound cool, or is there some reason that Porsche chooses them for each particular model?

They are generally internal designations the factory assigns for the project. Some, like 951 for the 944 Turbo, do not appear on the car. Some others of note are 931 (924 Turbo) and 993 (a version of the 911).
