Post Tire Experts: Yokohama AVS ES100

I'm going to need some tires next spring. These Yokohamas are very reasonably priced at TireRack.com right now and were recommended by my shop. Are they a good tire?

My car is strictly a daily driver, so I'm looking for a good tire, but not necessarily a great tire. How long should tires last on the 944? I have 205/50/17 in the front and 255/40/17 in the rear so I can't rotate them.

Any other recommendations? Thanks.

That tire just came out and replaced the AVS intermediate, so I dont think you'll be seeing too many opinions on it.

I have them on my 944 and like them alot. I have over 5K miles on them and they look like they are wearing well. Not quite as sticky when dry as the AVS-I but much better when wet. They have also been much quieter than the AVS-I. After getting the car aligned by a shop that knew what it was doing, I got about 35K miles on the AVS-Is I had. The ES100 has a better treadwear rating so I am hoping for at least that this time.

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but can anyone compare the Yokohama AVS Sports to the AVS-i, or other high performance tires? I'm not concerned with wet performance and don't expect to get more than 10,000 - 15,000 miles (maybe more like 8,000 rear and 15,000 front) out of a set of sticky street tires. I am price sensitive though.

I'm looking for 225/50-16 and 245/45-16. I'm leaning toward the AVS Sport, but I wish there was a less rain oriented tire that was even stickier. The KD's are too expensive and they aren't available in the sizes I am looking for, nor is the Kumho Ecsta MX or the Falken Azenis Sport.

A friend of mine has the AVS Sports on his 993 cab. They are pretty grippy in the dry, excellent in the wet.

I am thinking about the AVS Es100 as well for my 944. Can't beat the price. Obviously they had Kuhmo in mind when they priced them since the Ecsta 712s are dirt cheap and are a pretty good tire from what I hear.

I have those on my 944 Turbo S. I am very happy with them. Used thenm for Autocross and a Few DE events as well as street. Definitly better than the RE71s I had on before and have lasted avout 10miles. I think my RE71 lasted only 5k.

I think they are roughl comperable to the S-02 Poenzas and other max performacne tires at a lower cost. The Kumho Ecsta 712 are not as sticky a tire, but fine for basic duty.

If you really want to grip the next step up is an R-compound tire that will wear quick. If you want a super autocross "Street" Tire then Falken Azenis are the ones the SCCA guys covet. They need Treadwear of 140 or more to be a "Street" Tire.

What's the tread wear rating on the AVS -I's?

What is the generally recognized cutoff points between super stick track tires, some DE tires, streeters, and "hard-as-a-rock"/ BC cartoon tires?

Keep in mind that treadwear rating is not fully comparable for different manufacturers.

160

The AVS Sport is 220 for the sizes I am interested in, and 180 for most other sizes.

The ES-100 is a SWEET tire!! I'm buying them for BOTH of my cars when the Michelins on my 968 and AVS-I's on my 944 wear out. 280 treadwear is awesome for a Z-rated tire and if there's one thing I learned from working at a tire/wheel shop for a couple years it's how great Yokohama tires are.

I must say, I love the old AVS Intermediates. It was a great tire and reccomend them highly, although it wasnt the best rain tire. If anyone is open to suggestions though, My absolute favorite tire in the world is the Sumitomo HTRZII its just incredible in the wet and dry. IN the wet it just tracks like an arrow, it was incredible. They are super cheap though too, which is an added bonus.
