Power Steering Pump / is it necessary?
The tension adjustment rod for my power steering pump has snapped for the second time. This is getting to be a pain. Is the power steering pump necessary? Can I just delete it without changing my whole steering rack? Has anyone driven without one? The car is not a daily driver and I was wondering if it would be too hard to steer without it. Any suggestions?

You can steer without it, but longterm you will have to change out the rack to a manual one. Without the pump you'll end up changing it like it or not.
You'll also get a real work out at low speeds. Manual steering has nothing on power assist with no power behind it.
Bottom line is you're doing damage driving without the pump, you just might not see it for a while.
If the tensioner keeps breaking could you have another problem? Belts too tight? Bent pulley on the pump?

I run a power rack with no fluid in it and it works well. I made caps to cover the hose inlets. Effort is high in parking, but not a huge problem. One less thing to worry about failing.

I broke the same thing at the track about 1 year and 1/2 ago. I pulled the pump off and run fluid in the rack still, but with no power. Pump is no longer on the car.
I love it at the track. Much better feed back. At speed the steerings very nice. In first gear the steering is very heavy. Since mine is track only car it fine for me. Autocrosses are ok, but you do have to work a bit more.
I have not noticed any problems with the rack in that time and really don't expect any. I would not run it without fluid however.
For a street car you will only "feel" it at low speeds like parking lots. On the highway you will never notice its gone.
