Default Tips on using Wurth coating?

I think that is the name of the heavy stuff the factory used to coat the outer rocker panel and lower front/rear fenders (which then gets painted over to body color). Anyone have experience applying this stuff? Can it be done by brushing it on and then stipple?

Wurth is actually a supplier of auto shop supplies... http://www.wurthusa.com/project/en/t...tartpage_1.jsp

The undercoating that Porsche uses might be from Wurth, but you'd have to find a product name.

The product is normally referred to as body schutz. I know that Wurth and 3M make it. There are probably others. You can also use truck bed coating to get a similar appearance.

The product is sprayed on. I don't think you could brush it. The amount you spray is what deteremines the way it looks - i.e. how smooth or dimpled. It's very tough to match the factory.

Body schutz is correct. Wurth sells an applicator that sprays it on. It is water based and comes in black or gray. You can thin it with water which changes the texture in which it is applied. The applicator is just a fancy air gun - nothing special. It is very easy to work with.

Thanks guys. I can't imagine what that fancy air gun costs... Or maybe a larger needle/orifice in my LPHV gun?

It's a completely different kind of gun. A HPLV gun won't shoot it. You can buy similar product that will give the right appearance in aerosol cans.

It looks like 3M doesn't make it as an aersol with a built in nozel anymore. You would have to buy http://www.amazon.com/3M-Cleanup-Cov.../dp/B000PJCOFA and http://www.amazon.com/3M-08801-Clean.../dp/B00063WRJ8 to use their stuff. You probably can use a gun like http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/astr...0-p-11630.aspx , but you would have to double check.

The SEM product http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/sem-...3-p-15340.aspx is a very similar product and will have the same appearance. This is in an aersol.

A good option is go to the local paint supply store and tell them what you want to do. The guys may call it body schutz, chip guard, or just undercoating. Either way, they should be able to help you with a reputable product that will work. Make sure it's paintable.

Here's a place that carries Wurth products. I've ordered from them and would order again if needed:

It came out nice. You do have to be careful as it's easy to put too much on. The directions say to keep the nozzle at least 20" from the surface which is important. There is one area on the lower driver's side front fender where I repaired a small dent from PO who may have run over a curb or something. I didn't want to remove the entire area of rock guard and so tried to feather the existing stuff around this area and build up the new stuff to match. I think it will take several light coats to get this to work.
