How to clean inside of coolant resivour??

How to clean inside of coolant resivour??
The inside of the resivour is covered in orangish sludge. I have the res. out and Im trying to clean the inside. Gasoline does nothing to remove it. If I put my finger down inside and scrape it off it kinda looks like rust colored mud. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to clean this out without replacing the res. itself??

This question was covered some time last year on the 944 board... I don't remember the answer but someone did figure out how to clean this stuff off.
