Post And yeat after all P/S posts, here comes another!

Does anyone have this condition: Car is at idle, turn the steering all the way in either direction, do the rpm's drop?
Why?

Don't know why, don't know if it's a problem, but every car with P/S I have ever owned made the idle drop at full lock. So I don't do full lock except at dire need. Always made me wonder too.

My car does it tooo...

If I'm standing still and turn the wheel a little the engine sounds like its struggling a little...but I have some (probably) vacum related idle issues...

I would say it is because you are stressing the power steering pump and that puts the extra load on the engine through the drive belt.

Does not your model in question have a pressure switch on the pump itself..?

Later models do for certain, and the older pumps have a boss there in the PS location, so plans for the switch were though out before it was incorporated.

When pressure increases due to loading the pump, by turning the wheel without rolling or going to full lock, the later switch obviously corrects idle for these conditions..

Cheers

There's definitely a load increase as you turn the wheel. I guess at idle, the increased load pulls the engine speed down a bit. I noticed that when my power-steering belt was loose, it would start squealing when I turn the wheel, but is fine otherwise.
