Default Airbag in dash question

I am recovering my dash and had a quick question. If my airbag system is bypassed, is there any reason to reinstall the passenger side airbag?

Can an old airbag go off without warning? I have heard that before, not sure if it is true but I would get rid of it for that reason alone.

I did read a post about a passenger side airbag going off at the track when someone drove over some curbing. With the system bypassed it won't screw anything up if the airbag isn't reinstalled, will it?

Shouldn't screw anything up so long as the airbag system is bypassed properly. You will have to figure out how to remove the cover from the airbag, and then re-attach it to the dash unless you want a gaping hole. I'm looking at buying a non-airbag dash and having it recovered in burgundy to match my interior.

The door over the airbag is separate unlike the pad on the steering wheel. So, all you do is recover the door itself and don't reinstall the bags. I highly recommend recovering the dash it feels much better. More modern with a soft touch, not hard like the original. BTW, motor mounts and uprights are in. When I get finished with the interior the motor is going back in.

I did it myself and it looks awesome. I got the DIY kit from classic 9's. Never having done one before it took some time. The kit comes with some general directions and pictures for a 928 dash to give you a clue.

So you are able to separate the cover from the passenger airbag? How do the cover stay in the dash after that? I guess you have to somehow attach it? Also Tim, I forgot to ask, did the kit also cover the lower half of the dash or just the upper? Thanks again for the feed back and answering my questions, I am pretty sure I will attempt it myself now. I have the same issue with the airbag system, mine is no longer active and I would like to take it out, just need to figure out how to deal with the cover.

I tried to remove the passanger cover, but it feeled it was attached permanently from upper left corner. did the removal from below, and left the top cover in it's place.

The airbag attaches to the door with IIRC 4 bolts. The door attaches to the dash frame with four bolts that come in from the sides. If you remove the door bolts the unit will come out and the airbag can be removed from the door. Then the vinyl can be separated from the foam to be recovered. The passenger airbag isn't like the steering wheel. The door is solid and flips up in a hinge as the bag explodes out, it doesn't tear like the steering wheel airbag. The kit comes with only the upper half but I am sure he would or does sell a lower half. The defroster trim piece comes unpainted. I used some satin black Krylon paint.
