Post exciting event this morning with my ball joint

separated turning a corner into my office parking lot. Looks like the strut was the only thing holding stuff together...

How difficult is it to replace...and how much for parts? I'm located in Illinois (near St. Louis, MO). I'm guessing that if I do the drivers side (side that failed) I should go ahead and replace the pass side also...

Glad it didn't happen 5 minutes earlier when I was in a hurry to get to work and was travelling at a pretty decent clip!

Thanks for any help and info.

Glad that it didn't let go when you were pushing it.
On an early 944 the ball joints are easily replaced (and cheap). Figure around $30 per side to do it yourself. Replace them both, get an alignment and a lottery ticket!

lucky you have an early...it isn't expensive or difficult...yeah do both

I replaced the control arms and ball joints at the same time and all those rubber bushings including the sway bar

while you're at it, how are the tie rod assembles & steering rack?

finish up with a 4 wheel alignment and wadda improvement!

yeah, you were lucky in other ways too

I had a sway bar bracket snap one week and the steering shaft break the next

that’s when I decided it was time to rebuild the front end

didn’t want any surprises with something ‘snapping’ at 70mph

Early ball joints figure about $15 each. You got REAL lucky.

Might as well do the entire control arms as well. They are really cheap from Paragon.
