Post Expansion Valve Replacement

Does anyone have a procedure or tips for replacing the expansion valve on a 86 944/51? I've heard three different opinions, (dash removal, through the blower motor, through the glove box) but not from anyone who has done it themselves. Most have described their mechanics method or the workshop manual's instructions. Which is the easiest method? I plan to write up the procedure for future rennlisters so any tips would be appreciated.

Hey Jeremy,

Were you able to get a write-up going for the replacement of the expansion vavle? Is it as easy as removing the blower motor?

Also, does anyone know the amount of oil the entire A/C system requires?

Thanks...

Sure is. remove the 6 bolts that hold the blower motor and the expansion valve sits towards the passenger side of the evaporator. It's wrapped in thermal tape. Takes about 20 to 30 minutes to change the first time.

The 944's call for just over 2 oz of oil but I don't trust that #. I don't know if I've ever seen a system that holds less then 4.

Its that easy on the late models?

Looks like you have to remove the dash for early models.
