Original Market
I was just wondering if anyone knew what was the original market or types of people the 944 were sold to. For not being the second least expensive Porsche( Next to the 924s 86-88) it was not cheap at the time by any standards in fully equipped form the standard 944 was $29,500 in 1986 which I looked up in today’s money is in the upper 40’s similar to today’s Boxster.

Ahem.
I can give you some anecdotal evidence... I purchased my 84 new in June 1984. At that time, the drive-out price on a well optioned 944 was $25-26K. The demographic was "young, upwardly mobile professional" - recall "yuppies" in the go-go 1980's? A lot of the market for 944's was first time Porsche buyers and what we then called "dinks" (double income, no kids), ie. couples that might also drive BMW's, Saab's and Volvo's. (We also drove BMW's).
Some of us (very few, probably) kept these 944's as a reminder of our lost youth and because they're just a whole lot of fun.
